It probably would have been the greatest comeback of the season… if the kicker hadn’t screwed it up by missing the game-tying extra point.
The defense was practically nonexistent- both teams combined for over 1,198 yards. Both teams pounded each other on the ground Cal rushing for 280 and Texas rushing for 286. All of Texas’ touchdowns came from runs. Both teams were also strong passing the ball, Jerrod Heard passing for 364 yards. Jared Goff threw 2 touchdown passes in the first half. At the end of the half, the game was tied at 24. Cal opened the second half with 21 unanswered points. At the start of the forth quarter, Cal up 45 to 24, this game seemed to be one that was over before the clock ran out. Late game heroics by Texas quarterback Jerrod Heard(a 13 yard TD run and 45 yard TD run with 1 minute and 11 seconds left in the game ) and a rushing touchdown by running back D’Onte Foreman seemed to tie the game up with a minute left.
Even Texas coach Mack Brown did not see his kicker miss, as kicking is such an automatic part of football. He said, “This one here hurts. … Extra point is automatic. I didn’t even look.”
